MSc Computing and Software Technology
Computing is about data, algorithms, programs and computers. It is a young academic discipline and is rich in applications, since computing systems are everywhere: in science and engineering, medicine, design and manufacture, commerce and public service, defence, transportation, arts and the media, and the home. Modern software technology enables people to use computing systems to create, store, search and communicate written, aural and visual information. The long tradition of mechanisation in our world, as exemplified in the Industrial Revolution, is today being led and underpinned by Computing. It has been referred to as the Information Revolution. Computing is driving the revolution through developments in hardware and software. Both are important, but it is the software which allows the hardware to be utilised to its full potential. An education in Software Technology as provided in this MSc will thus enable you to participate with confidence in the revolution.
Since September 2003 we have offered an MSc in Computing and Software Technology which is suitable for both Computer Science graduates and others who have gained some experience of computing and basic programming in their first degree. As well as graduates we give serious consideration to mature age candidates with substantial relevant experience. An example of the latter category would be someone who had worked in a computer related environment for some time and who wished to update or broaden their knowledge. A willingness to work hard and an ability to solve problems is more important than a formal qualification in any particular subject.
Our emphasis on Software Technology as a specialisation within Computing is also reflected in the department's links to the Centre for Communication and Software Technologies that has recently been established. It is anticipated that many students on this MSc will undertake projects linked to the interests of staff associated with this centre, and that some may go on to undertake research associated with the centre.
