Applying for a KTP

A step by step guide

Step 1 - Discuss the project

If you are thinking of starting a KTP then please contact Ali Parker in the Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) to discuss your idea. Ideally a quick meeting will be held with the company, Ali and the academic so that everyone is clear about their responsibilities and the project plan.

Step 2 - Submit Expression of Interest form

This short EOI form is completed with input from the academic, company and DRI. DRI will then submit the application form.

Step 3 - Meet with KTP advisor

At this stage it is wise for the KTP advisor to meet with the company, academic and a representative from DRI to discuss the form and the next steps.

Step 4 - Submit full application

The EOI form is reviewed and you will then be asked to complete the full application This will be submitted by DRI to the TSB, . There are key deadline dates for submission, they are usually every 6-8 weeks. The company also hass to sign a joint commitment statement at this stage.

Step 5 - Review of application

The Partnership Approvals Group (PAG) at the KTP office will review the application and there is sometimes request for additional information. If successful a Grant offer letter  is issued to both the University and the Company.

Step 6 -  Letter of Acceptance with company to proceed with project

Once a Grant offer letter has been received at Swansea university, Swansea University will ask the company to formally accept the offer in writing, recruitment cannot start until the Letter of Acceptance is returned

Step 7 - Acceptance of Grant Offer letter with Technology Strategy Board

The terms and conditions of the Grant Offer Letter must be accepted in writing by Swansea University. In addition to this Swansea University has a standard agreement which covers issues such as Intellectual Property which the University will agree with the company partner.

Step 8 - Recruitment of associate

This is done jointly with he company partner and the academic to ensure the best candidate is chosen. Terms and conditions of employment are included in the job advert (place of work, hours, holiday etc). Both the academic and company interview the candidates with an additional member of University staff

Step 9 - Signing of KTP agreement

Once the associate has been recruited and a start date has been agreed then the formal KTP agreement between the company and University is signed.

Step 10 - Enrol on KTP online and the Supervisors workshop
