Swansea University relationship with Tata is an example of a regional centre of excellence and high tech cluster linking the local supply chain in new research projects, commercial opportunities, funding, training and further collaborations.
The EPSRC and EU funded Coated 2 and Metal project funds over 40 Engineering doctorates and work based learning providing both research and a talent supply for industry and academia. It underpins SPECIFIC Innovation & Knowledge Centre which work with local authorities to implement the Buildings as Power Stations project and the establishment of the Steel Science Centre which will address the current and future challenges of sustaining primary steel-making capacity in the region and the UK
The partnership has created impact by leveraging additional UK and EU funding, spin outs (Hexigone), community outreach programmes (Materials Live), new research buildings and student placements.
‘’The graduates that come from our Swansea EngD partnership are the life blood of our technical and management sections. Their research outputs directly affect our business competitiveness and the large number that work in our supply chain continues to add value after they have left the University’’ Dr Martin Brunnock, Director, Tata Steel Strip Products UK
