Employability and Transferable Skills

The importance of gaining valuable core skills and life experience whist at University has never been so critical. As scientists in training you will be taught a full range of core skills and practises by leading experts that will enable you to successfully pursue a career within biology and ecology.

Undergraduate Degrees

Our Undergraduate degrees in Biosciences will:

  • provide you with an understanding of a wide range of biological and ecology theoretical and practical skills
  • provide opportunities for you to learn and undertake a range of sampling and survey techniques for both plants and animals
  • equip you with the practical, taxonomic, numerical and computational skills that are valued and required by many employers
  • develop your essential transferable skills, such as team working, communication, presentation, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • prepare you for a rewarding career in a wide range of areas, including the Environment Agency, British Heart Foundation, Health Protection Agency, Natural England, Countryside Council for Wales, Veterinary Laboratories Authority, the wildlife trusts, county councils, CEFAS (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture), and the biological and biochemical industries      
  • prepare you for pure research (universities or research institutes) and applied research at postgraduate level
  • allow you to do PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) Science training

Masters Degrees

Our Masters degrees in Biosciences will:

  • give you transferable skills, including team working, communication, presentation, and analytical skills
  • equip you with skills necessary to work confidently in vocational areas such as conservation, environmental impact assessment, environmental management, monitoring and education, and fosters an objective, scientific and realistic approach to environmental biological issues that students may have to face in a professional capacity
  • equip you with skills relevant for a rewarding career in a range of diverse fields, including government agencies such as Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency, English Nature, Scottish Heritage, Fisheries Research Services, Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture (CEFAS), as well as other organisations such as Zoos, Wildlife Parks and Reserves, National Parks, Environmental Departments, Research and Development of SMEs and large companies
  • prepare you for pure research (universities or research institutes) and applied research at postgraduate level

Swansea Employability Academy

SEA logo‌The Swansea Employability Academy (SEA) was created to give all students easy access to a comprehensive employability programme. Working closely with the Careers Service, SEA is committed to improve all elements of student employability, from timetabled careers sessions and fairs, delivery of the SEA award, the WOW and SPIN placement programmes through to events like the dedicated employability week activity, ongoing scheduled employer events, talks and seminar sessions. Whenever you see this logo across campus you know an employability event, workshop or employer talk is taking place which you can attend.

Every year we survey our recent graduates to ascertain their employment status.  The data is more commonly known as the Graduate Destinations Survey and is reported to HESA (the Higher Education Statistics Authority).  Here are some examples of job titles from the recent survey:
