The Research Institute for Arts and Humanities was established in August 2009 as the research and knowledge transfer arm of the College of Arts and Humanities at Swansea University. We support our researchers – staff and postgraduates – to develop collaborations inside and outside the University, and to maximise the impact of their research.
The Institute comprises three major Research Centres, a number of Research Groups, a Graduate Centre and an External Advisory Board. Our strategic aims are:
- to foster high-quality research outputs by providing funding for research-related expenses, mentoring and team-building
- to increase the College’s income from external funding sources by encouraging more high-quality applications, publicising funding opportunities, holding training workshops on grant bids and building networks of researchers across the College and University
- to increase our number of postgraduate research students by offering bursaries, developing flexible degree programmes, providing world-class training, and creating a dynamic and supportive postgraduate research culture through the Graduate Centre
- to develop a rich research environment by attracting national and international scholars to Swansea, sponsoring visiting and honorary fellows, providing career development for early-career researchers, and supporting research seminars and public lectures
- to maximise the impact of our research by developing partnerships with external business, industry and public-sector organisations. and prioritising research initiatives which target external end-users
- to enrich the community life of Wales and the UK through public engagement and transfer of knowledge

External Partnerships
As part of our objective to maximise the dissemination of world-class research produced by Arts and Humanities scholars at Swansea, RIAH welcomes sponsorship from business, industry, charities and public-sector organisations. There are also opportunities for representatives from external bodies to become members of the RIAH Advisory Board, the principal function of which is to advise on knowledge transfer and public engagement activities and the promotion of our research strengths outside the University. Board members benefit from access to our internationally-acclaimed research expertise, the development of major collaborative projects and postgraduate internships.
