Swansea University announced on 10th April 2017 that both its undergraduate Welsh and English medium Public Relations degrees have been awarded the status of accredited courses by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).
“We are really delighted to achieve accreditation for these courses,” says Dr Sian Rees, Head of the department of Media and Communication which runs the degree programmes. “This means that the CIPR has confidence in our courses as a really valuable professional route to a successful career in public relations. As a department we align all our courses closely with industry, aiming to produce the communications and media production managers of the future.”
Accreditation has been awarded on the basis of careful mapping of the degree content against the Institute’s professional skills criteria, alongside successful applications for CIPR membership by lecturers Iwan Williams and Dr Sian Rees, based on their prior industry experience. The valuable existing work by the department which has involved the creation of an Industry Advisory Panel for the degree programmes, embedded industry assessments within the degrees, and the provision of work placement modules for students, have all helped secure the accreditation, particularly as one of the key criteria is the job destination of graduates. Accreditation should help boost recruitment to the department of Media & Communication, as well as improving graduate job prospects for students.
