Taught MA Programmes

We offer three taught MA programmes, each with a different professional focus:

  • MA in Professional Translation (MAPT) – administrative and technical translation (with optional pathway in Literary Translation), work experience, computerised translation tools and technologies;
  • MA in Translation and Interpreting (MATI) – shares many modules with MAPT, emphasises Public Service (not Conference) interpreting. Prepares students to take the DPSI exams of the Chartered Institute of Linguists;
  • MA in Communication, Media Practice and PR (MACMPPR) - designed to prepare students for careers in the creative, media and marketing industries.

Each programme is available in two formats: Standard (180 credits over 12 months) and Extended (240 credits over 15-21 months). Both include the option of a 60-credit, 13-week Internship instead of, or alongside, the Dissertation.  The Extended MAPT and MATI also offer a unique opportunity to study abroad in semesters 3 and 4, at two different partner universities in the prestigious METS consortium.

Postgraduate research degrees

Swansea University offers talented linguists with a good MA or equivalent background the opportunity to start a PhD in Translation. A PhD is a research degree, which means that there are no (compulsory) taught classes and exams. The result of the research is a thesis of up to 100,000 words. You will have a supervisor and a co-supervisor who are specialists in (different aspects of) your topic and whom you will meet regularly. A full-time PhD takes three years and a part-time PhD six years.
