ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
We welcome all enquiries and applications. Our preferred offer for Single and Joint Honours is ABB-BBB at ‘A’ Level (excluding General Studies). However, meetings/interviews with staff on UCAS visit days may allow us to make flexible offers. Candidates pursuing Scottish Highers, the Irish Leaving Certificate, Access courses, the International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate or Welsh Baccalaureate qualifications, are also eligible. We welcome applications from candidates with non-traditional qualifications. Swansea University has one of the best records in the UK for facilitating access to higher education for disabled students.
We particularly welcome applicants from outside the United Kingdom. For candidates offering the International Baccalaureate, a typical offer is 33 points. International candidates studying for American qualifications would have obtained their High School Diploma and in addition to this we normally look for a minimum of 550 in each part of the SAT reasoning and subject tests (or 1650 overall) and/or a minimum IELT score of 6.0.
VISIT DAYS FOR UCAS APPLICANTS
We invite most of our applicants to a full visit day and group interview where we offer you the chance to meet informally with members of the teaching staff and our current students and you can have a good look around the University with a student guide, including on-campus accommodation.
In August, when your results are published, your application will be carefully reviewed in the light of your examination performance. Preference is given to candidates who have made Swansea their first-choice university by firmly accepting our offer. Our total first-year inake is normally about one hundred students.

HOW IT WORKS
In each year of study a student pursues 6 modules of 20 credits each; these are normally divided equally between the two semesters of the academic year. For each degree scheme, there is a combination of compulsory modules and optional modules. Those on a Joint Honours degree scheme will normally do 3 modules in each of their subjects in any given year, although there is some flexibility.
In the first year (level 1), the emphasis is on ensuring that the relevant background and skills are acquired and enhanced to enable further, more detailed, study within the chosen degree scheme at levels 2 and 3; students also have the opportunity to choose optional modules from the department, or from other departments. This creates a flexibility around a central core, which means that it is often possible for students to alter their degree scheme on entry to level 2, should they wish to.
At level 2, there is 1 module which is a compulsory for each of the degree schemes, but otherwise students have a very free choice from a broad range of specialized, focused modules. Students can choose to concentrate their studies more on one aspect of the ancient world (e.g. Roman history), or can study modules which range widely in terms of both chronology and discipline. Many modules are available to both level 2 and 3 students, and are offered on an annually alternating basis, so that each student gets the chance to choose each module at one level or the other.
Level 3 is similar to level 2 in terms of the amount of choice on offer. In addition, there are modules aimed specifically at level 3 students, and also 2 compulsory modules: the Dissertation Research Folder and Dissertation or Museum Project.
N.b. The modules at levels 2 and 3 are particularly likely to change, as they largely correspond to the research interests of current staff: the lists given here represent what has been available in the last couple of years.
