BA American Studies
We offer a number of different ways to study the United States here in Swansea. Single and Joint Honours are taught over four years with the third year spent in America. There is also an option to complete the course in three years and still spend a semester in the States! The course aims to cover all aspects of American civilization, examining history, literature, politics, society and popular culture from the discovery and founding of the “New World” up to and including the ever-changing modern face of the most influential nation on the planet.
Swansea University awards Excellence Bursaries of £3,000 to all UK/EU students who achieve 3 'A' grades at A level or equivalent and income-related bursaries.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
We welcome all enquiries and applications. Our preferred offer for Single and Joint Honours is BBB at ‘A’ level (excluding General Studies). Candidates pursuing Scottish Highers, the Irish Leaving Certificate, Access courses, the International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate or Welsh Baccalaureate qualifications, are also eligible. We welcome applications from candidates with non-traditional qualifications. Swansea University has one of the best records in the UK for facilitating access to higher education for disabled students.
We particularly welcome applicants from outside the United Kingdom. For candidates offering the International Baccalaureate, a typical offer would be 32 points. International candidates studying for American qualifications would have obtained their High School Diploma and in addition to this we normally look for a minimum of 550 in each part of the SAT reasoning and subject tests (or 1650 overall) and/or a minimum IELT score of 6.0.
VISIT DAYS FOR UCAS APPLICANTS
We invite most of our applicants to a full Open Day where we offer you the chance to take part in a workshop or seminar, chat informally with members of the teaching staff, current second and final year students and you can have a good look around the University with a student guide, including the on-campus accommodation.
In August, when the A level results are published, your application will be carefully reviewed in the light of your examination performance and the recommendations made at interview. Preference is given to candidates who have made Swansea their first-choice university by firmly accepting our offer. Our total first-year intake is normally about sixty students.
HOW IT WORKS
Structure of Single and Joint Honours Schemes:
• American Studies offers 4 year programmes with the third year spent studying at an American University and 3 year programmes, studied in Swansea.
• The department also offers a 3 year programme with a semester of study abroad.
• In order to structure an academically coherent and intellectually rigorous programme, American Studies at Swansea is built around compulsory and optional modules. Compulsory modules in American Studies, though generally based in the disciplines of Literature, History and Politics will be interdisciplinary in their approach.
• A Joint Hours Programme usually entails a 50/50 spilt between the two departments i.e. students will take half their courses in each one of the two departments.
