My time at Swansea University has been invaluable to my personal, academic and career development. A degree in American Studies has enabled me to have the breadth of skill to undertake an MA in Publishing. They are not closely related topics but without the experiences my degree gave me I would not have had the capacity to adapt to this new vocation. The year I spent in Albany, NY was awesome. In one year you learn how to travel independently, survive in a new culture and make some great friends along the way…all of this with the full support and hard work of a dedicated team in the department who are ready to help at every turn.No other course offers to you the diversity- as a student you have the opportunity to study all facets of American culture. The American Studies Department provides a supportive environment for students and is driven by their social and outgoing students. As a course it has provided me with the confidence to know my own strengths and pursue a career which builds on them.

I loved my time in Swansea, and believe that both the university and the American Studies degree course were great fun, with an excellent balance of both academic study and extra curricular activity in a beautiful part of the UK.The American Studies course was interesting, dynamic and varied which meant that I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and the diversity of topics covered. The highlight of the 4 year course was a year spent at UNCW (University of North Carolina Wilmington), which proved to be one of the best years of my life, and key to my own personal development as a young adult.I feel that the American Studies Degree, although non-vocational, really helped me improve upon skills such as analysis and communication, both of which I use in my current position as Brand Manager within the fragrance and cosmetics industry. I would, without a doubt, happily endorse both the American Studies course and Swansea as a great choice to make for your degree.

My degree in American Studies left me with many transferable skills that have been instrumental in my continuing educational and professional development as a primary school teacher. Academically it allowed me access to a wide range of subjects such as history, politics, literature and geography, which has enabled me greater confidence as a teacher as I have a range of knowledge rather than a specific focus on say, history, for example. The supportive environment of the American Studies department allowed me to develop both academically and socially. My involvement in the American Studies staff/student committee over the course of my three years at Swansea allowed me to develop interpersonal skills and organisational skills. The chance to do a year abroad has undoubtedly helped with my professional development. A year of study at Colorado State University offered me a unique opportunity to develop greater confidence, self awareness, and an ability to work with different people and acclimatize to a different culture. As a personal experience it has definitely helped me to stand out from those around me and offers a different dimension to your personality and working opportunities. The study abroad program was extremely valuable and worthwhile experience that helped me develop a flexible yet efficient working style, definitely a desirable trait for potential employees.
