We offer an M.Phil research degree by thesis only, which can be pursued either full-time or part-time and is an attractive alternative to a Taught Masters, or a PhD where you have the opportunity to develop your individual research interests under one-to-one supervision across three years. The PhD is a gateway to advanced professional status and a requirement for most university-level teaching and research jobs. The PhD is generally thought of as a life-changing experience within a persons intellectual development and the degree is an opportunity to extend your enthusiasm and commitment to a particular subject so as to produce a unique contribution to knowledge.

This is an excellent time to be engaged in American studies. Following eight years of extremely conservative Republican government under George W. Bush, we are at the beginning of a new democratic government under Barack Obama, America’s first black president. However, America faces great problems in both the national and international arenas. In a globalised world it is now more important to understand America.
