Supporting the next generation of sporting stars
Will Jones (student), Phil Jones (student), Alun Wyn Jones (Alumnus) and Siwan Lillicrap (Alumna and Head of Rugby), have all been included in Wales’ squads.
Will Jones, an Engineering scholar, has captained Wales U20’s throughout this year’s 6 Nations tournament. Will is the third U20 captain to be selected whilst still being a student at Swansea University during the last 4 years. Previous U20 captains include Steff Hughes (2014) and Rory Thornton (2015) who were formerly students.
Will was awarded a sporting scholarship, donated by Dr Carol Bell Chair of Swansea University’s Development Advisory Board, which assists up-and-coming athletes to pursue their academic studies. This sporting scholarship has given Will to the flexibility to compete at the highest level while also fulfilling his academic potential in his degree.
Welsh rugby captain and Swansea University alumnus Alun Wyn Jones also received a sport scholarship.
“The Sports Scholarship at the university allowed me to pursue two career paths simultaneously. I fondly remember my time at Swansea and particularly a Varsity win. In the future, knowing a career in sport doesn’t last forever, I won’t rule out returning to further my qualifications”.
Help the next generation of sporting stars
Whether you’re a former sport scholar yourself, a past member of a sport society, or just simply a sports fan, we’re sure you can understand the challenges our students have in balancing their studies with their training and finding the finance required for kit and travel expenses.
Swansea University is committed to supporting elite athletes by giving them the provision and opportunities they need to reach their potential and this can only be done through providing funded sport scholarships.
If you choose to make a donation towards sports scholarships at Swansea, you will be making a real difference to a young sportsperson’s life. We have seen first-hand how scholarships have shaped the academic and sporting careers of former students, and you could help to give next year’s elite athletes the same opportunities.
Making a donation could not be easier. Every donation, whether large or small will make a real difference to our students.
