Leaving a legacy to Swansea
Including Swansea University in your Will is simple and will cost you nothing today, but will have an enduring impact on students and academics alike in the years to come.
Anyone can make a gift in their Will, whether large or small. Even a modest percentage of your estate - after you have provided for your family and friends - give us the ability to seize opportunities and can have a life-changing impact.
You can direct your gift to whichever area you are most passionate about supporting. Whether you’re passionate about bursaries and scholarships, or access to world-class sporting facilities; about medical research, or encouraging enterprise and innovation, there are many ways in which your legacy can make a tremendous difference to life at the University.
For example, bequests can be used to commemorate the donor or to honour another person. In the past, professorial Chairs, scholarships, buildings and rooms have been named following the gift of a bequest.
Swansea University has charitable status and therefore pays no tax on the gifts received, including bequests. In addition to this, bequests have taxation benefits for a legator’s estate. Any bequest to a charity is deducted from the value of the estate before inheritance tax liability is calculated
To ensure that your wishes are adhered to, your Will needs to be carefully prepared. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you take professional advice when writing or changing your Will. In the meantime, please contact the Development and Alumni team if you have any queries and we will be happy to discuss options with you.
