Ceri Stilwell

Name:  Ceri Stilwell (Rise)

Course studied: BSc Business Management specialising in Finance

Graduation Year: 2008

Why did you decide to study at Swansea University?

My family are originally from Swansea, as a young child we would go on family holidays and I would always look at the University building on the way to the beach and really want to go there one day! When I got accepted, I was the happiest person on the planet.

What did you enjoy most about your course at Swansea?

I enjoyed the variety of my modules; I felt it gave me a real understanding of the theory of business. Learning from the lecturers as they had so much knowledge to share with their students. Being made to present in front of an audience – which was terrifying, and still is, but I now know that I can do it!

What are you doing now career-wise? Include Job Title/ Name of Organisation/ Role & responsibilities

Product Executive for Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Croatia, Bulgaria, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Portugal, Madeira & Cape Verde at Hotels4U.com

My main roles and responsibilities are to ensure the information on the website for the hotels in my areas are up to date and in line with contract between hoteliers/chains and Hotels4U. This includes the content about the hotels, the most up to date images and completing any errata notices that come through.

To increase revenue for all my destinations by working with the contracting, pricing, marketing and operational teams within Hotels4U and Thomas Cook. Making sure that we are competitively priced though the different channels.

Working on projects within the company, helping towards wider goals.

How was Swansea University and your course helped you with your chosen career path

Swansea University and my course helped me understand how business works, by having exposure to a number of different business sectors i.e. Marketing, Legal, Computing and Finance I feel I have a better understanding (but by no means a lot!) of the theory behind how different parts of a company works.

What are the most challenging parts of your job?

Working to a deadline, even though I find this exciting within my job, it can however be very stressful to complete everything on time, especially if it is dependent on other stakeholders.

What are the most rewarding parts of your job?

I am still very new to my role at Hotels4U, however I can imagine completing projects that I am currently involved in will be very satisfying. I love the variety of my day to day jobs as you just don’t know what you are going to greet you when you turn your computer on!

What was the best careers advice you were given?

To gain as much experience as you can within a number of different parts of the business that you work in. In my last role, I dealt with a number of different people within the organisation. This has made me much more confident in my new role at Hotels4U. Never be afraid to ask a question, as no question is silly!

What advice do you have for current students and new graduates?

Join as many clubs and societies as you can, this is something I wish I had done. Make sure you learn as much as you can and put this into practice when working. Also, get experience in different things to make your CV look the best it can be – and also make sure you enjoy yourself!!

What are your plans for the future?

To carry on working within the travel industry and eventually having my own family.

What have you done that you are most proud of?

Graduating – I was the first in my family to graduate.

What are your favourite memories of your university years at Swansea?

Friday nights at Diva’s, BBQs on the beach and making the lifelong best friends I could have ever asked for. I loved that Swansea University was so close to the beach, but still had a decent sized shopping centre – it was like having the best of both worlds!
