10. Attendance Monitoring Escalation Process for Taught Students

10.1

Students must attend at least one scheduled teaching event per week.

A student who misses all events for two weeks in succession will enter an escalation process. It is designed to re-engage students who have been absent from studies, to identify reasons for the absence and to assist students who may be experiencing difficulties or may need particular support.

10.2

The escalation process is explained and illustrated below:

  • Stage 0 – Student is attending at least one scheduled teaching event per week.
  • Stage 1 – Student has missed all events for two weeks in succession.  The student will be contacted with concerns about attendance, directed towards support services, and invited to meet and discuss their attendance with their Department.
  • Stage 2 – Already at Stage 1 and the student has missed events for a further two weeks.  The student will be contacted again, warned about the consequences of non-attendance, and asked to attend a meeting with their College. They will be warned that failing to meet may be a factor in any decisions taken about their future as a student if their attendance does not improve.
  • Stage 3 – Already at Stage 2 and the student has missed events for a further two weeks.  At the discretion of the College Director of Learning and Teaching (or nominee) the student may be permitted to continue provided that they immediately return to attendance.  However, the Director of Learning and Teaching has the discretion to require the student to attend for an interview, and only permit them to continue if this is satisfactory.  If a student is required to attend an interview and fails to attend they will normally be required to withdraw from the University.
  • Stage 4 - Failing to attend subsequently will result in the student being required to withdraw in all but exceptional circumstances.

10.3

Where a student’s attendance improves they will be contacted acknowledging this. Each period of two weeks of improved attendance means that the student will drop one stage in the escalation process.
